The Royalton chair was designed by Philippe Starck to equip the lobby, the lounges and the restaurant of the Royalton Hotel in New-York as part of a renovation project. It was edited by Driade between 1991 and 1995. Indeed, in 1988, this hotel was completely renovated by the designer at the request of Ian Schrager, director of the chain. For Starck, this major hotel project was "a true act of creation" personal, modern and inventive whose purpose was "to become a classic".

The chair is made of mahogany, as most of the New York Hotel. With the choice of this wood, the designer actually wanted to echo the American navy, which has a certain importance in the city's history. In addition to the mahogany that makes up the piece and two of its legs, the third is made of cast aluminum.
